A thought...

PG-13... you might not want to let your children read this post... I'm thinking out loud...

I can't take credit for this thought... I'm not this smart, nor am I a deep thinker. My mom and I were talking about how our society is "entertained" by violence and screwed-up relationships in our entertainment and news. It's so sad to see all the bad and horrible things that happen in the world... and we don't just "hear" about them... we have to WATCH them happen and see in great detail all the carnage that goes on around us. WHY?! The more I thought about it, the more the Lord spoke these things to my heart:

  1. It's not so much the violence and gore that people are glued to... it's the resolution at the end. The "good guy" always wins and the "bad guys" are always defeated. People recognize that there is a lot of "bad" in our world... and they are desperately searching for a resolution. When the world fails to give them a resolution, they look for it in their entertainment. Entertainment is really an escape from reality, so if there is a resolution to the problems there, maybe the "real world" won't seem so bad after all...

  2. If we are able to see all the trouble and desperate situations around the world on the news... our own "struggles" and "trials" here might not seem quite so bad. Without the hope of the Lord, people want to find a way to feel "ok". They want a way to rationalize their lives and problems as "not so terrible". Watching other people go through intense suffering (i.e. - the China earthquake) makes things here pale in comparison.

  3. When it comes to relationships and sex in tv and movies it's a similar attitude. I watched a popular prime time show last night and within a two hour period I was treated to an explicit sex scene, teenagers giving away their virginity to one another in the name of "love", two women sucumbing to their lesbian urges, a woman dealing with intense depression and attempting suicide, and a non-romatically involved couple deciding to have sex because one of them was sad. WHAT?! That's a whole lot of stuff for a brain to deal with in a two hour span of time! WHY does our society feel "entertained" by all of that?? First of all, I think that relatioships are SO screwed up and "messy" that we are seeking to "normalize" things like having sex "just because" and lesbian/gay relationships. Because people DO deal with those things themselves, normalizing the issues makes their feelings "ok" and they feel like they're not "different" from everyone else. We just want to feel "ok" and "happy". Over and over in tv and movies we're told to go with our "feelings" and to "follow our hearts."

In short, without the Lord in our hearts, we are all searching for something, anything that will make us feel that the "hole" in our being is filled, even temporarily! I pray that God will enable me to share the Hope and the Truth with those around me who are searching....
