Peru letters 2 & 3

Here's the next two installments of the notes from the Iquitos team... things are going well!!

HELLO FROM PERU.

WE HAVE BEEN TO THE EDGE OF THE
EARTH. IT IS FLAT AND
NOT ROUND.

ON SUNDAY THE TEAM HEADED DOWN THE
AMAZON RIVER TO
MAKE A VISIT TO SOME LOCAL CHURCHES. IT WAS NOTHING
LIKE
WHAT WE HAD ENVISIONED. AFTER FLOATING DOWN THE
AMAZON IN A GLORIFIED CANOE
WHILE JIM B AND JIM O
BAILED WATER, WE CLIMBED A SANDY BANK AND TREDGED
THROUGH THE BANANA GROVES TOWARD THE VILLAGES TO
MINISTER TO THE LOCAL
CHILDREN AND ADULTS. KRISTIN
WAS ABLE, BY GOD´S GRACE, TO GIVE HER TESTIMONY
IN
SPANISH. THE GROUP PLAYED GAMES AND SANG SONGS AND
TALKED OF GOD´S
GRACE. TO GET TO ANOTHER VILLAGE WE
HAD TO TAKE A DINGY THROUGH THE SWAMP
WHERE WE WERE
WARNED BY THE LOCALS TO KEEP OUR LIMBS INSIDE THE BOAT
FOR
FEAR OF THE SNAKES AND ANIMALS THAT MIGHT EAT
THEM.

IN THE EVENING
WE WERE FINALLY UNITED WITH DAWN AFTER
MUCH CONFUSION. HER FLIGHT INTO
IQUITOS WAS REROUTED
ON ACCOUNT OF THE LIVE VOLCANO IN QUITOS, ECUADOR.
THIS LEFT HER STRANDED IN LIMA FOR 8 HOURS. HER
LUGGAGE HAS YET TO
ARRIVE AND SHE WAS TOLD TODAY THAT
NO ONE KNEW WHERE IN THE WORLD IT IS.

TODAY THE MEN HEADED INTO THE JUNGLE. THE JUNGLE HAS
LOTS OF RAIN.
THINGS MOVE VERY SLOWLY BUT WORK IS
BEING ACCOMPLISHED. SOME LOCALS JOINED
THE MEN AND
THEY WERE GREATFUL AS THE WORK IS VERY HARD AND
GRUELING.
MATT JUST ABOUT LEAPED ACROSS THE TABLE
AFTER PRAYER OVER DINNER TO FILL HIS
PLATE! THE WOMEN
HAD SPENT THE MORNING IN THE MARKET SHOPPING FOR FOOD.
IT RAINED THE ENTIRE TIME. IN THE AFTERNOON WE
PREPARED DINNER AND NANCY
MADE SOME DELICIOUS COOKIES
WHICH OUR PERUVIAN FRIENDS GREATLY ENJOYED. THE
PERUVIAN CHILDREN WERE INTRODUCED TO THE JOY OF COOKIE
DOUGH AND LICKING
THE BOWL.

THE CONDITIONS HERE ARE HUMBLING AND MAKE US SEE THE
ABUNDANCE WE ENJOY IN AN ENTIRELY NEW LIGHT. WE ARE
SO VERY GRATEFUL FOR
A COLD SHOWER AT THE END OF THE
DAY AND THE SIGHT OF EACH OTHER. THERE ARE
NO RULES
TO THE ROAD AND IT IS VERY DIRTY. NO ONE BELIEVES IN
TRASH CANS
BUT THE PEOPLE SEEM VERY CONTENT.

WE WILL TRY TO UPDATE DAILY. IF
SOMEONE NEEDS TO GET
A MESSAGE TO US PLEASE RESPOND TO THIS EMAIL ADDRESS.
MUCH MUCH LOVE TO ALL. MARK SENDS A SPECIAL HELLO TO
HIS WIFE AND
CHILDREN. AS DO NANCY & JIM TO THEIR
KIDS. KRISTIN SENDS HER LOVE TO JAY
AND THE KIDS.
DAWN SAYS HI TO HER ENTIRE FAMILY. ADAM SENDS A KISS
TO
HIS GIRLS.

WE LOVE AND MISS YOU ALL VERY MUCH.

And from yesterday:

Tuesday, February 12, 2008 Peru Team
Hello all back in New Jersey. We
have heard about the snow and man could we use a little. Every day it is very
hot, very humid, and there is a reason it is called the rain forest. It has
rained every day. We are clearing acres of the rain forest so when you here of
those bad people clearing the rain forest, it includes God´s people doing His
work.
Our first day in the field was very frustrating for us and for our
Peruvian friends, Lucho, Juan, and Guillermo(Gizmo for short, he is Carlos´
brother. Today we had a very productive day. They are hard days as we must tote
everything in at least one-half mile. Today we all lugged 100lbs bags of
cemento. Yesterday and today it was some huge trees, that they call lumber. We
have constructed the side walls of the boys dormatory and have the footers dug
for the bathroom. Tomorrow is more of the same but the roads may be washed out
as it has been raining tonight alot. Today was also marked by Adam´s official
entrance into the workforce. Yesterday was an ¨administrative day¨ for him,
which I am sure you can guess, he took some significant grief.
The ladies
have been spending their time shopping, doing kitchen work, sewing, and other
lady like things. Nancy and Kristin, the two most domestic of the gals are just
tickled. Tomorrow they along with Dawn are coming to the Jungle.
Sunday
evening was very exciting. We showed ¨The Jesus Film¨ on the wall of Wally and
Lois´s house. At the end, their neighbor, Clara, was very moved by what she had
seen and accepted the Lord that night. Please pray for her as she moves from her
emotional state to the realization of what it means to really know Christ and
live by His commands. She will have great support just across the street. During
shopping today the woman were able to hand out tracts in some street evangelism.
As we reported last spring, the Lord is moving and accepted here. Even Jeremy
(Lucho´s son)witnessed to the ice cream man tonight.
That´s all for now.
Thanks you for your prayers. We feel them.
